Stats glossary

Baseball & slo-pitch stat abbreviations

What each abbreviation on a box score means, the formula behind it, and — where it matters — exactly how Score That Play counts it. Every stat here is worked out from the play-by-play log, not typed in.

Hitting

Batting stats

Every batter gets these, game by game and as season totals. In a slo-pitch game this is the whole stat sheet.

PAPlate appearances

How many times a player came up and finished a turn, whatever happened.

Formula Every completed turn at bat

In the app A steal or pickoff while the batter is still up does not end the turn, so it is not a PA.

ABAt-bats

Plate appearances that count against a batting average. Walks and sacrifices are left out; strikeouts, outs, errors and fielder’s choices are in.

Formula PA − walks − sacrifice flies − sacrifice bunts

AVGBatting average

The share of at-bats that ended in a hit, written to three decimals (.333).

Formula H ÷ AB

HHits

Reaching base safely on a batted ball, without an error or a fielder’s choice.

Formula Singles + doubles + triples + home runs

2BDoubles

A hit on which the batter reaches second.

Formula Hits worth two bases

3BTriples

A hit on which the batter reaches third.

Formula Hits worth three bases

HRHome runs

A hit on which the batter comes all the way around. Both kinds count as a home run.

Formula Home Run (Over Fence) + Home Run (In Park)

TBTotal bases

Bases gained on hits. A walk or an error adds nothing.

Formula 1B + 2 × 2B + 3 × 3B + 4 × HR

RRuns

Credited to whoever crosses the plate — a courtesy runner, not the batter they ran for.

Formula Times the player touched home and the run counted

RBIRuns batted in

Runs the batter drove in. Score That Play never credits an RBI on an error.

Formula Runs that count on the batter’s plate appearance, unless it was an error

BBWalks (base on balls)

The batter is awarded first base. Not an at-bat, so it cannot lower an average.

Formula BB plays

SO / KStrikeouts

The batter is out on strikes. The stats table heads it SO and the box score K.

Formula Strikeout plays

SFSacrifice flies

A fly-ball out that lets a runner score. Not an at-bat, but it does count against OBP.

Formula Sac Fly plays

SHSacrifice hits (bunts)

A bunt that gives up the batter to move a runner up. Not an at-bat.

Formula Sac Bunt plays

SBStolen bases

Credited only to the runner who advanced — not to anyone who held their base.

Formula Bases taken on a Stolen Base play

CSCaught stealing

A runner thrown out trying to take a base. The app counts pickoffs here too.

Formula Runners put out on a Caught Stealing or Picked Off play

OBPOn-base percentage

How often a batter reaches base. Unlike AVG it credits walks, and it counts sacrifice flies against the batter.

Formula (H + BB + HBP) ÷ (AB + BB + HBP + SF)

In the app The app has no hit-by-pitch play, so HBP is 0 in practice.

SLGSlugging percentage

Total bases per at-bat — batting average that gives extra weight to extra-base hits.

Formula TB ÷ AB

OPSOn-base plus slugging

The two added together, as a one-number summary of a hitter.

Formula OBP + SLG

LOBLeft on base

Runners stranded at the end of a half-inning. Score That Play charges it to the stranded runner, including a batter who reached on the third-out play, and to a runner whose run was wiped out by a force out for the third out.

Formula Times the player was still on a base when the side was retired

In the app Counted for every game, but not yet one of the columns in the box score or the team stats table.

Pitching

Pitching stats

A pitching line needs a pitcher on the mound, so these come from baseball and fastball games. Slo-pitch mode hides the pitcher, and with it these stats.

IPInnings pitched

Each out is a third of an inning. The box score writes it the traditional way: 5.1 is five innings and one out, not 5.1 innings.

Formula Outs recorded ÷ 3

BFBatters faced

Every batter who finished a turn against this pitcher.

Formula Completed plate appearances against the pitcher

EREarned runs

Officially, runs that would have scored without an error. The play log does not say which runs an error caused, so Score That Play counts every run as earned.

Formula In the app: all runs allowed

ERAEarned run average

Earned runs per nine innings. Because ER is every run in the app, it reads as runs allowed per nine.

Formula (ER × 9) ÷ IP

WHIPWalks plus hits per inning pitched

Base runners allowed per inning, not counting errors.

Formula (BB + H) ÷ IP

K/9Strikeouts per nine

Strikeouts per nine innings, whatever length the games actually were.

Formula (K × 9) ÷ IP

BB/9Walks per nine

Walks per nine innings.

Formula (BB × 9) ÷ IP

K/BBStrikeout-to-walk ratio

Strikeouts for every walk. Higher is better.

Formula K ÷ BB

Also on scorecards

Terms the app does not count

You will see these on other scorecards and stat sheets. Here is what they mean — and, plainly, that Score That Play does not track them.

OBSObstruction

In a scorebook, OBS marks a runner awarded a base because a fielder who did not have the ball, and was not fielding it, got in their way. If you were looking for on-base plus slugging, that is OPS.

In the app Score That Play has no obstruction play. It does show OPS.

HBPHit by pitch

The batter is awarded first after being hit by a pitch. Not an at-bat; counts toward OBP.

In the app The stats table has a column for it, but there is no hit-by-pitch play yet, so it stays at 0.

IBBIntentional walk

A walk the defence chose to give. Counted as a walk, and separately as an IBB.

In the app There is one BB play, so intentional walks are not counted apart from other walks.

GIDPGrounded into double play

A ground ball that gets two outs on the one play.

In the app Not counted. A double play is recorded by marking two runners out on the play.

Two plays decide a lot of these numbers. A fielder’s choice is an at-bat with no hit, so it lowers a batting average. A sacrifice fly is not an at-bat and earns an RBI, but still counts against on-base percentage.
